Bender is one of my favorite fictional robots and I have been wanting to make something bender related for a while. I got inspired by seeing cross sections of barbie dolls and thought it would be neat to do the same for bender.  There are 2 shots in the show of the inside of Bender’s head but they were not enough to make this feel complete. So instead I looked up all of bender’s functions and decided whether or not it would make sense to include it in the cross section of his head. A lot of the items in his head are never shown in the show so I looked at real world versions. Just as in the show I kept bender’s hardware pretty low tech. For example the back of his head accepts floppy disks so for the connection between his eyes and brain I thought a VGA cable would fit right in.  I also tried to make sense of the placement: His inhibition unit is near the front of his head because that is where the magnet would interfere most with it (making him sing folk songs). Also I have thought long and hard about how bender’s mouth would work in reality and I couldn’t come up with a realistic explanation. So for now we just have to pretend his teeth can retract like a roller blind that also bends. Here is a list of stuff from the show that’s included:  Cheating unit Flight to remember 2-1 (mentioned) 6502 microprocessor, rod + gear 2-4 (seen) Floppy drive How Hermes requisitioned his groove back2-14 (disk is seen)  Voice modifier Bender gets made 2-17 (mentioned) EFTPOS leela’s homeworld 4-5 (used) Spray paint pharaoh to remember 4-7 (effect seen) Pager less than a hero 5-6 (effect seen) Gyroscope The mutants are revolting 7-12 (effect seen) Computer chip referred to as “my brain” Roswell that ends well 3-19 (seen) If printed at 100% size you will end up with a life size version so if you like you can use real cables, RAM and floppy drive if you like. The way things fit together should be pretty self explanatory but if you need help feel free to ask.

I use 3D printing to bring objects that fascinate me to life. Usually this is fan art but original pieces such as sci-fi objects and weird things like My articulated scissors too.
