Youtube video of the lamp working youtu.be/SQfb2vlhGtc   15-04-2018 Finally the Stranger Things desk light is completely done! 2 new pictures added and a video update showing the lamp completely done somewhere in 2017 (Still waiting for a plasma ball and a power switch but that's all for completion. Its a DIY project so with some building experience and a small amount of soldering skills you can make this as well.) 1-Tips for building and covering the Case: 2-BOM: 3-Final Notes: 1-Tips Glue the side plates that need the be together with CA place them on a flat surface then use activator for a fast bond of the CA glue. To get a smooth looking surface on flat 3D printed parts like these use matt/flat picture paper (not glossy). Use Bizon Tix on the 3D part and paper to glue them in place it also helps a lot giving the case strength. You can use basically all types of paint on the paper but make sure to give it at least 2 coats of primer or just normal paint because the paper will absorb a lot of paint in the beginning and looks funky The red background behind the text is made from packaging material 'blister case' any type of transparent plastic will do you need to paint it red of course most common paints will do the trick. Red leds behind this background will light it up. 2-BOM Bill of Materials 6x 3mm red leds for the background (i used blue and red but only red is better) Resistors for LED 2x USB Plasma Balls they are cheap to find on ebay around 6€ a piece 5v PSU (phone charger) 1A minimal 1x Power Jack 3 Pin Terminals 5.5 mm x 2.5mm DC Power 1x USB cable for power jack and PSU 5 meter (16 feet) of power cable must be enough connect it all i think 1x On-Off switch 8x Magnets to held the backdoor in place or use a other method because magnets are not so great for this... Fiber Optic for the light i used 0.75mm you can find a roll on ebay or aliexpress or just buy a cheap fiber optic kids toy lamp and use that :) RGB leds can be found on ebay make sure you choose the Slow blinking and Double legs. Those are ready to use and dont need any other then a resistor to do the job. https://youtu.be/SQfb2vlhGtc WARNING You need to disassemble the USB Plasma Balls in order to make it fit in the case. Plasma Balls use HIGH VOLTAGE it can kill you! So don't try this!
