A low-friction filament spool holder to be mounted to 1x2 timber rails using a cam lock mechanism allowing easy mount/dismount to timber with an approximate thickness of 18mm. This design was created specifically for the Joel Telling's 3D Printing Nerd design challenge. Design features include: Holds spools up to 5kg with a spool length less than 110mm and an internal diameter greater than 42mm (1 11/16"). Can be used without disturbing spools stored on the 1x2 rails. Spool is held 80mm in front of rail for clearance of spools above and below. Cam lock to allow easy mount/dismount yet secure when in use. Therefore you only need one spool holder per printer. Internal 'crown' provides adjustment for variable thickness timber. Suits timber thickness from 17mm to 19mm. Dot -> 1 = 19mm, Dot -> 10 = 17mm 2 x 608 'Skateboard bearings' provide cheap, low friction filament dispensing. This is ideal for use with flexible filaments. Easy print design - no supports required. Assembly Print all the parts. Make sure the Spindle and Spindle Pins are printed with a brim to ensure sufficient bed adhesion. Position the Finger so that the 'numbers' are printed against the bed and position the Crown so that the 'dot' is facing up. This will help assembly later. Lightly file or sand the upper most surfaces to remove any 'dags' left by the extruder on the last layer. Insert Spindle Pins to Spindle. These are a close fit and you may need to 'lean' on them to assemble. Place the bearings onto the Spindle Pins. Insert Crown into Finger. If your timber thickness is close to the nominal 18mm, position the 'dot' on the Crown nearest the number 5 on the Finger. Remove any 'elephants foot' from the Key and insert it into one half of the Body. Place the Finger and Crown assembly onto the Body and Key assembly ensuring the Finger is not up-side down. Place the other half of the Body onto the assembly. The two halves should meet without any gaps. Slide one Keeper onto the holder and move it as far as it will go towards the Finger. This will allow the bearing to slide in next. Place the Spindle and Bearing assembly into position and slide the keeper over the bearing to hold it in place. This is designed to be a snug fit and there are 'positioning bumps' underneath the spool holder. Place the last Keeper onto the end of the Spool Holder assembly and position it in the middle of the bearing and between the 'positioning bumps' on the underside. Assembly complete!
