My son showed me this model by rubixcube6 (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2575949) that he had found through a random search on Google. I liked the idea, but not the open design. I wanted something enclosed. It took a while to get the dimensions correct but finally had a working model. Unfortunately, this was not simple to assemble and I had to take a Dremal to my design to allow it to fit together. I decided instead of using cocktail sticks/tooth pics, if I used a 3D printed stick it allowed me to bend the assembled slide to allow an easier fit. One thing I would advise is to assemble the model before preparing the slides to ensure everything fits correctly. Every printer will print differently and what is perfect on one will not be on another. The sticks need to be lose in the wheel holes to allow the animation to work. I advise either file/sand the ends till they are free moving or run a small drill bit through the holes. With my redesign I realised that I could easily change the animation. So, if I made more animation cartridges I could make if more versatile. An unforeseen feature was that the crank could be moved, making it suitable for right and left-handed people. https://www.thingiverse.com/rubixcube6/designs

I always wanted to be a draftsman and have always had a passion for designing things. I started my life as a cabinet maker, so love making things, whether it’s out of paper, cardboard, wood or plastic. I am a keen crafter and amateur book binder. I love computers and consider myself very computer literate. I have taught IT, built my own PC’s, repaired PC’s and worked in IT for a short while. So it was only natural that considering my background I would move into 3D printing. I consider myself a novice, but am learning new techniques every day and love the fact that there seems to be a whole community just for 3D printing. What a wonderful place to learn and share my work with like minded people.
