My set of four “Abstract theme” player pieces for the Ravensburger Labyrinth Contest consist of a Yellow-Pentagon, Green-Hexagon, Red-Heptagon, and Blue-Octagon. Each player has a “Labyrinth” designed into its base. If you look at the Base of any player piece while rotating the piece you notice open and blocked paths through its “Labyrinth”. This effect is the same fo all four players — however each player is different because the tops have either 5, 6, 7, or 8 sides. Sides are twisted and tapered as you move down towards the base. This twist effect is a metaphor for the twists in strategy as the game is played. The design is meant for each player piece to be 3d printed in a different filament to designate the four different color circles on the game playing board. If however you use the same color filament to print each piece the pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, or octagon design is useful to differentiate one player piece from another. The biggest challenge I had in creating these player pieces was staying within the rather small 1 cm base and 4 cm height requirement while still having the features discussed above. Each player piece takes about 25 minutes to print on my 3D printer. No supports are required. My MakerBot Replicator Mini printer’s software slices the design and adds a raft which is easily removed without any tools. Of course if you desire to create a larger player piece as a winner’s trophy you can scale up your 3D print. The software I used to create the design is iPad Pro based and called Shapr3D.
