Sterling Shaner McGill University Department of Mechanical Engineering 23 April 2018  Dial calliper is made according to a lead screw pitch of 2 mm per revolution. Thus one half-turn equals one millimetre. Minor markers are made every 2mm and major markers every 10 mm. The platforms of the jaws include a calibration pad of 0.15 mm, allowing for the device to be finished and calibrated with sandpaper.   Experience with threads has found the tolerance of 0.2 mm to be sufficent, threads will mesh and grind to shape very easily with minimal backlash.    Caliper is not meant to be extremely precise but to be used in replicating purposes, sufficient to measure an object comfortably to 0.5 mm easily. Higher resolution is expected.
