These terracotta figures were discovered with hundreds of others in a site to the south west of the Mausoleum at Halikarnassos. They were found in an undisturbed deposit, stacked in neat layers according to their type. The figures range in date from about 480 BC to 330 BC; these ones date to the 4th century BC. A stone inscription found on the site records a dedication to Demeter and Persephone and some of the terracotta figures are of types commonly dedicated to those goddesses.
