Vittoria Colonna (April 1492[1] – 25 February 1547), marchioness of Pescara, was an Italian noblewoman and poet. She developed an artistic friendship with Michelangelo Buonarroti, with whom she exchanged verse. The early death of her husband, in 1525, gave Colonna the opportunity to develop and maintain her literary contacts and become one of the most popular poets of sixteenth-century Italy. Read more about her story here. Celebrated for her beauty and platonic passion which had inspired Michelangelo, Vittoria Colonna was a strong poet who fascinated the world with her letters from the XVI century. This beautiful sculpture by Maurive David de Gheest, a Paris based sculptor carved this piece from marble in 1889 and was given to the state in 1893.   This object is part of "Scan The World".
