The subject of this modern rework of a bust of a man is unknown. The text on the socle of the base reads 'ZHNШN' which contains letters which aren't from the Cyrillic script, despite all other busts surrounding this one being of Russian origin. If forced into Cyrillic script the bust would read 'ЗЧНВН'. The back of the bust suggests it has the same origin as the other surrounding busts, reading 'Fondu a l'Academie J. des Beaux Arts de S. Petersbourg . Par E . Gastecloux . 1793' (tra. ENG. Cast at the Academy of Fine Arts of St. Petersburg. by E. Gastecloux. 1793). From the appearance of the bust itself we can guess that the bust depicts the philosopher Plato. If anyone can offer a translation or a confirmed identification for this bust, please get in touch!
