Thomas Montanus (1617 - 1685), or Thomas Van den Berghe, was a physician in Bruges and published a book about the characteristics of the plague. This bust was erected in the courtyard of the old Saint John's Hospital in Bruges, and it is a replica of an original bronze from the place of the doctor's birth, Diksmuide.
