Located in the Parc de la Tête d’Or in Lyon, France, this sculpture was commissioned by the city. It represents a woman lying on the side, curled up with her legs crossed. This may remind us of the position of a child in his mother’s womb. Her eyes are closed as she seems to be sleeping peacefully. However, this general impression of tranquillity is disturbed by the empty gap dug in her chest and stomach, as if something had been cut out or torn off from her. This is when the title of the statue becomes meaningful:  one may see a representation of motherhood after giving birth, when the child becomes a full individual, leaving a terrible void into his mother’s bosom.
