The horse was reconstructed, at the royal initiative, from the endless number of bronze fragments of a beautiful quadriga found in 1739 in Ercolano. The writer Alessio Simmaco Mazzocchi from Capua inscribed it on the base of the work when it was exhibited in the yard of the Museo Ercolanese. Winckelmann, a german art historian and archaeologist, saw it in Portici and wrote about it in the famous letter to Count von Bruhl in 1762.
