This work from Imperial Rome depicts a seated dog. In Ancient Rome dogs were valued for their faithfulness and courage and were often seen on Greek and Roman reliefs and ceramics as symbols of fidelity. Dogs were given as gifts among lovers and kepy them both as pets, status symbols or kept for guardians and hunting dogs.
