William Edward Forster, PC, FRS (11 July 1818 – 5 April 1886) was an English industrialist, philanthropist and Liberal Party, statesman. His staunch advocacy of lethal force against the Land League earned him the nickname Buckshot Forster. The inscription on the front of the statue base says: William Edward Forster / born July 11-1818 / died April 5-1886 / to his wisdom and courage / England owes the establishment throughout the land of a national system of elementary education
