This sculpture, made in the Atlantic Zone of Costa Rica, shows a person with hermaphroditic features. These representations were very important within the artistic expressions of the pre-Columbian cultures, whose dual symbolism (masculine-feminine) is associated with fertility, of which the indigenous elites were carriers and reproducers. The fact that a human or mythical being with these characteristics has been embodied in stone, indicates that its different nature gave it an important position within society.   This object is part of "Scan The World". Scan the World is a non-profit initiative introduced by MyMiniFactory, through which we are creating a digital archive of fully 3D printable sculptures, artworks and landmarks from across the globe for the public to access for free. Scan the World is an open source, community effort, if you have interesting items around you and would like to contribute, email [email protected] to find out how you can help.
