This muscular satyr gently decants wine from a wineskin - one of the most ancient types of wine containers. Impermeable leather hides were often used as canteens to store and transport wine. Early modern collectors often decorated their homes with ancient statuary acquired during tours of Italy, considered a rite of passage for the elite male, and bacchis subjects like this satyr spoke to both the owner's erudition and aesthetic taste. The head, arms, and legs below the knee are all additions carved in the 18th century, probably by a sculptor who specialized in restoring such ancient sculptures.   This object is part of "Scan The World".
