This is a sculpture depicting Sappho with the Cupid and lyre.  Sappho of Lesbos (c. 620-570 BCE) was a lyric poet whose work was so popular in ancient Greece, and beyond, that she was honoured in statuary and praised by figures such as Solon and Plato. A maquette for a work in plaster ordered by the City of Paris and shown at the Salon of 1876. A marble version was shown at the Paris Exhibition of 1878. This is a copy of the marble work displayed in Musée d'Orsay which stands in front of the town hall of Marpent.
