This fountain is part of the Peterhof gardens, designed after an order of Peter the Great. As the rest of the Lower Park, it is in a neoclassical style, inspired by the French Renaissance and the French formal gardens. This inspiration may be noticed through the architectural elements: the pilasters and the sculpted heads are an obvious link to Ancient Greek and Roman architecture. Such gardens are made to symbolize grandeur and rationality, two central subjects at the beginning of the Age of Enlightenment.
