The Risen Christ (Italian; Cristo della Minerva, also known as Christ the Redeemer or Christ Carrying the Cross) is a marble sculpture by Michelangelo, housed in the Santa Maria sopra Minerva church in Rome. It was contracted in June 1514 and was to be completed with in four years. Various adjustments had been made to the sculpture since it was created, such as the inclusion of the stigmata in Jesus' hands and feet, and later his genitalia covered behind a bronze loincloth. This scan originates from a cast of one of the earlier verisions of the work (before the loincloth was put in place), and was featured alongside a newer version in The National Gallery's 2017 'Michelangelo and Sebastiano' exhibition.   If you produce new work with the model and want to share it with us, drop us a line at [email protected] or [email protected].
