A human emerging from the jaws of a serpentine dragon is a recurring image in Mesoamerican art. Snakes were a metaphor for the umbilical cord connecting the earthly plane with hidden sources of creation. Such images call attention to the threshold dividing the human domain from the invinsible but ever present ancestral spirits (see maya lintel 25)
