There are two known series of portraits of Vespasian. The first, survivng in larger numbers, follows the tradition of the private portrait, emphasising the bourgeous appearance described in the literary sources. The Mattei head belongs to the second, later series, more idealized and closer to the canons of Julio-Claudian portraiture. Some stylistic features and its provenance from a collection suggest a late reworking, or even a 17th Century fake.
