This is a cast of the marble original sculpture of 1538 by Michelangelo Buonarroti.   It is now in the Bargello museum in Florence. It was commissioned by the republican Donato Giannotti for cardinal Niccolo Ridolfi. It is said to have been commissioned to honor the deed of Lorenzino de Medici, who had earned the name of Brutus by assassinating his distant cousin, Alessandro.
