The Habsurg governor of Hungary, Palatine Joseph (1776-1847), who too a close personal interest in national Hungarian art, played a key role in making improvements to the nation's cultural institutions. His support led, among other things, to the establishment and expansion of the Hungarian National Museum and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and the founding of the Pest Art Society. Through his management of the Pest Beautification Committee, the city also experienced a boom in fine architecture
