This 3 m high statue was inaugurated on 5 October 2011 by cardinal Philippe Barbarin, archbishop of Lyon et M. Gérard Collomb, Mayer of Lyon to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the beloved Pope's visit to Lyon.  It has been carried out by French sculptor, Elisabeth Cibot and shows John-Paul II standing close to the basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière and looking over the city of Lyon while blessing it, thus repeating the gesture of 5 October 1986 (day of the Pope's visit to Lyon).
