Fossil remains of this new species of dolphin, as of yet unnamed, were discovered on the Caribbean coast of Panama, near the town of Piña. The fossils were found in rocks belonging to the Chagres Formation, which is about 6-7 million years old. The specimen was originally discovered in early 2011 by Dioselina Vigil Pimentel, at the time an undergraduate student at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) in Panama.
