Title Pan Pursuing Syrinx Artist Gilles-Lambert Godecharle (Brussels 1750 - 1835) Date Between 1787-1804 Medium Marble Dimensions 226 x 211 x 203 x 96.5 Accession # Inv. 3472 Credit Acquired from Mrs Edmond Willems in 1898 from a set of sculptures by the same artist (inv. 3469, 3513) which decorated the Wespalaer castle gardens near Leuven. This slightly larger than life marble sculpture depicts the narrative of Pan pursuing Syrinx. In a similar structure to Apollo and Daphne, Pan (The God of Nature and sexuality) falls deeply in love with Syrinx, a nymph known for her chastity. Pursued by Pan, she ran to a river's edge and asked for assistance from the river nymphs. In answer, she was transformed into hollow water reeds that made a haunting sound when the god's frustrated breath blew across them. Pan cut the reeds to fashion the first set of pan pipes, which were thenceforth known as syrinx.   This object is part of "Scan The World".
