The Wedgwoodn’t Tureen was designed and made to test the software, hardware and revolutionary ceramic materials of the new Industrial Revolution of Additive Manufacturing (AM). I decided to take an iconic object from the first Industrial Revolution and produce it in a way that would be impossible to make using conventional industrial ceramic techniques. The design is loosely based on early Wedgwood tureens, chosen because Josiah Wedgwood was at the forefront of the first Industrial Revolution. Many manufacturers including Wedgwood produced ceramics that imitated other materials. I chose to imitate a material with links to rapid prototyping. Artificial bone was chosen for it's interesting texture and because it is produced using AM for experimental implants. The tureen has been designed on Rhino 3D and FreeForm software. The files were then sent to a ZCorp 510 3D printing machine that ‘printed’ the piece. It was then infiltrated to give the plaster material more strength, and subsequently coated in a non-fired ceramic material, developed by a French company, which I customised to imitate Wedgwood Black Basalt. - Michael Eden Read More http://wedgwoodnt.blogspot.com

About the author:

My work sits at the intersection of art, design and craft, exploring contemporary themes through the redesign of historical, culturally familiar objects utilising digital manufacturing and materials. An MPhil research project at the Royal College of Art allowed me to explore how his interest in digital technology could be developed and combined with the craft skills acquired during previous experience as a designer and maker of ceramics. Having attracted wide media and public attention, the work has been exhibited internationally and acquired by a growing number of international Art Galleries, museums and collectors.
