This portrait of Marie Adelaide of France, daughter of King Louis XV (reigned 1715-1774), was commissioned by the administration of the King's Buildings in 1763 and presented by the king to his daughter. Madame Adelaide then gave it to her chevalier d'honneur (highest ranking officer), the Baron de Montmorency, in whose family it remained until the early 20th century when it appeared on the international art market before being acquired by the Louvre.
