A lamassu, sometimes called a lamassus, is an Assyrian protective deity, often depicted as having a human head, the body of a bull or a lion, and bird wings. In some writings, it is portrayed to represent a female deity. This statue was found in the remains of the palace inaugurated by King Sargon II in Khorsabad (northern Iraq) in 706 BC.
