Lady Sackville-West was an elegant, wealthy woman loyal to Rodin. They were friends and she was part of his clientele who usually asked for portraits. They first met in 1900 and subsequently met again in 1913 when the woman asked the artist to execute a portrait of her. This required numerous sittings, the artist made many models of the piece. He changes its aspect in many different ways: going from the facial expressions to the posture of the neck and position of the head. In the final product, the head generously tilts to the side, placing the woman in a dream-like state. For this reason, Lady Sackville was not happy with the final result as in her opinion it did not really show her real self.
