Color:

A portrait of the French neo-classical painter Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres (1780-1867) by his close friend Bartolini. Lorenzo Bartolini was born in Prato and trained in Paris as a painter and sculptor. He became Director of the Academies of Carrara and Florence and the leading Italian neo-classical sculptor after the death of Canova. The present work is indebted to Italian quattrocento bronzes as well as to classical relief sculpture. The painter is represented in working blouse flanked by an owl, symbol of wisdom, and an acanthus flower. The original plaster model is in the Gipsoteca Bartoliniana in Florence and a bronze version of c.1806 is in the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris.
