This bison metatarsal was 3D scanned with a NextEngine Desktop 3D scanner at the Western Science Center’s (http://www.westerncentermuseum.org/) Valley of the Mastodons workshop and conference in August 2017. The metacarpal was temporarily removed from and then returned to a floor exhibit that also contains the remains of a mastodon known as Lil’ Stevie. Courtesy of the Western Science Center.

The Virtual Curation Laboratory at VCU formed through a project with the U.S. Department of Defense’s Legacy Program to develop a digital data project that incorporates the use of a three-dimensional object scanner in recording American Indian and historic artifacts for analysis and conservation.
