Thorvaldsen was on friendly terms with the painter Vernet, who was the Director of the French Academy in Rome from 1829 to 1835. The two artists exchanged portraits: this is the bigger marble bust, which was started by Thorvaldsen in Rome in 1834 and finished by H.W. Bissen in 1856.
