This abstract sculpture is the author's depiction of Hinemoana (Ocean woman/maid), a personification of the sea in New Zealand mythology, a daughter of Tāne, and wife of Kiwa. She would engulf canoes if tapu had been broken during their construction unless they were protected by the other gods. Their realm is guarded by Kaukau and Te Arawaru. The offspring of Hine-Moana consisted of shellfish and seaweed of many species. The sculpture is shaped like a long puffy dress with shapes at the bottom presenting waves.
