The interpretation of this herm as Hermes is based on the parallels with a similar sculpture placed on a column of the 4th century B.C. in the Artemision at Ephesus. The lowered position of the right arm suggests that the god originally held a bronze caduceus in his hand, the typical attribute of Herms.
