In Greece it was customary to set the head of Hermes on small pillars as a tutelary deity: this form of representation gave rise, for deities, to the sculptural typology of the herm, whose name derives from that of the god Hermes. In the Roman world, herms of the gods came to be used for decorative purposes. This example is in the archaizing style, ca. mid-2nd century AD.
