This head is a copy of a basalt statue housed at The Glyptothek in Munich (inv. 523). The sculpture depits a young man, but is believed to be a Roman copy of an original statue of Orpheus from ca. 460 BC. The original work was foudn in Cumae, South Italy, and was purchased by Munich in 1926 from a collection in Geneva. Orpheus is a legendary musician, poet, and prophet in ancient Greek religion. His narratives are centered on his ability to charm all living things with his music, popularized in the mythological story of Orpheus and Eurydice.
