The epitaph on this tombstone states that it belongs to "Suros' son, Dionysodoros". The Greek symposium was a male aristocratic social gathering where men drank together, conversed and enjoyed themselves. Perhaps it is this inherently liveliy aspect that makes it such a recurrent theme on Hellenistic gravestones - Hellenistic funeral art focuses on the life of the deceased.
