This cartonnage mask is from the Early Roman Period, about AD 20-40 from Hawara. The eyes, cased in serrated bronze sockets, are made from obsidian and limestone. The pupil and iris are engraved. The headdress and front flap of the mask are covered with traditional Egyptian funerary scenes. Classical tastes are reflected only in the row of curls on the forehead, a fashion characteristic of the Julio-Claudian period, and in the name and age of the subject, inscribed in Greek on the headdress.
