The Indian prince Ghazi-out-Your Haidar ordered this and another portrait from Thorvaldsen in 1824. The distant European sculptor had to model the bust from a sent portrait of unknown type - possibly a coin with the king's depiction. It is believed that the former general governor of India, Lord Francis Rawdon-Hastings, who was in Rome in the winter of 1823-1824, has acted as an intermediary or even initiated the order.
