The deceased woman is depicted as per a statuary type known as pudica. The small servant girl to the left raises her hand to her bowed head in sorrow; the one on the right holds a cylindrical box. This type of vertical funerary stela with a reduced number of figures started to appear in Asia Minor in the 3rd century B.C.. Beneath the pediment an epitaph (inscription) flanks the wreath: “Thalea, (daughter of) Athenagoras, (from the city of) Oroanna, greetings!”
