This funerary cippus, originating from Verona, depicts a winged Eros (Cupid) leaning on an overturned torch. An overturned torch is commonly used in funerary artefacts and is even used as symbolism in the modern age. The torch's light being stubbed out on the ground is symbolic of death. A Cippus is small, low pillar commonly used by the ancients for various purposes such as: indicating the distances of places, for landmarks, sepulchural inscriptions, etc.
