The Queen Eleanor Memorial Cross is a memorial to Eleanor of Castile outside the front of Charing Cross Station, London. It replaces a smaller medieval cross that was nearby in Trafalgar Square and traditionally marked the centre of London. Eleanor of Castille was the beloved wife of Edward I and when she died in 1290 he was heart broken. He then decided to set the bar for romantic gestures pretty high (this was the age of chivalry after all) and installed 12 memorial crosses across England between 1291-94. The monuments were erected from Nottinghamshire to Westminster Abbey, marking the stops her funeral cortège made along its route. The monument lasted in its original location until 1647 when it was removed by an Act of Parliament during The Civil War. It was replaced by the equestrian statue of Charles I, now accepted as the very centre of London. (text credit) Date: 1865 510 photos taken in November 2020 with a Sony a6000 and processed in Reality Capture. Small cross at the very top has been reconstructed. There is a red colour cast on the stonework on one side of the base. This is an error in the texture baking caused by a nearby scissor lift.
