Franz West was an important contemporary Austrian artist who distinguished himself by a mixture of sculpture and installation art, land art and graphic art. West represented Austria 4 times at the Venice Biennale. West wanted his art to be useful, that is why in the last decades of his career he produced huge sculptures inviting the people to participating to the art work by touching it or even sitting on it. West said that for him art belonged in the streets, where people did not have to travel to see it. In the public space, where the daily life happens, people can chose to participate to the art or to ignore it.
