The theme of Ecce Homo (“here is the man” in Latin) consists of Christ facing the crowd after the Flagellation. His hands tied, he holds a reed in the place of a sceptre. This low-relief sculpture is a part of the oldest series of reception pieces for the Royal Academy of painting and Sculpture, consisting of religious subjects. It was presented to the Academy on 5 August 1657, shortly after the Mater Dolorosa (“Mother of Sorrows”) by Girardon.
