This mythical creature was the main decoration on a monumental gateway built in Paris in 1728-1732 by the architect Pierre de Vigny. The gateway led into a courtyard called “The Cour du Dragon” (later destroyed), near the present day Rue de Rennes. The dragon, carved under an ornate wrought iron balcony, is an attribute of Saint Margaret, patron saint of the street opposite and of the wife of Antoine Crozat (commissioner of the work). This sculpture is one of the few surviving examples of Rococo decoration made for a building in Paris.
