Antonio Canova was an Italian neoclassical sculptor, famous for his marble sculptures. Often regarded as the greatest of the neoclassical artists, his artwork was inspired by the Baroque and the classical revival, but avoided the melodramatics of the former, and the cold artificiality of the latter.  As many art pieces of his time, this sculpture holds a religious value as it represents a monument dedicated to Clement XIII who was pope from 1758 to 1769. It is also interesting to underline that Canova also made Clement XIII's tomb in St Peter's Basilica.
