During his last meal before his arrest, Jesus gives his disciples one last lesson in humility by washing their feet. According to the ancient oriental custom, slaves would wash the feet of guests before a meal. Christ is kneeling before Peter who raises his hand to express his refusal. On the right, four disciples prepare to undergo the ritual by taking off their shoes and rolling up their garments. Saint Martial proffers a towel to Jesus placed behind him. The apostle of Aquitaine, Martial is also thought to have preached the gospel in Toulouse.
