On the day of Christ's resurrection (Easter), two disciples leave Jerusalem and are travelling on the road to the city of Emmaus. Jesus joins them without making his identity known. Dressed in the manner of twelfth-century pilgrims, they tell Christ about recent events and the rumours about his empty tomb. That evening, the two men invite Jesus to share their meal. The disciples recognise him from the way he breaks bread, as he did at the Last Supper.
