'Christ Appearing to Mary Magdalene' is the first of Christ's appearances following his resurrection. Left alone, Mary Magdalene is weeping close to the empty tomb. She notices Jesus but at first takes him for the gardener, as represented by the palm trees. Christ then makes himself known and recoils before Mary Magdalene who kneels before him with her arms outstretched. Alerted by Mary Magdalene that Christ's tomb is empty, Peter and John run to the sepulchre to make sure. The scene of The Race to the Tomb seems to make its first appearance in Romanesque sculpture here.
